A food label scanner turns a packaged food into a verdict. The apps differ on three things that matter more than the design: what they read (a barcode looked up in a database, or the label itself), whether they work on Indian packs, and who pays for them.

  • Google Play, as "TruthIn Smart Product Scanner": 4.49 from 9,357 ratings, 10 lakh+ installs. App Store India: 4.38 from 531 ratings.
  • The company says its health rating was built with doctors and nutritionists. ICMR-NIN named it a promising innovation in December 2025.

FactsScan

  • Google Play, as "FactsScan: Food Scanner App": 4.35 from 265 ratings, 1 lakh+ installs. App Store India: 4.17 from 35 ratings.
  • Its App Store listing describes a health score out of 100 and grades from A to E.

Open Food Facts

  • Reads a barcode, against an open database built by volunteers and run by a non-profit. About 23,000 Indian products are listed.
  • Google Play: 4.04 from 7,664 ratings, 10 lakh+ installs.

Yuka

  • Reads a barcode.
  • Not in India's App Store, and India is not among the countries its help centre lists. Google Play shows 4.59 from 188,091 ratings, a global count.

What to check before you pick one

  • Does it work on the pack in your hand? A barcode app can only answer for products already in its database. Reading the label works on any pack, and depends on a clear photo instead.
  • Does it show its working? A score you cannot trace back to a number printed on the pack is a score you cannot check, and "why did it get this score" is the question readers ask most about these apps.
  • Does it compare per 100 g? Serving sizes are chosen by the manufacturer, so only per-100 g figures compare two packs fairly. Why that matters.
  • Who pays for it? Ads, affiliate links and paid tiers are all legitimate models, and each one is worth knowing about before you trust a ranking.

What LabelSaaf does differently

LabelSaaf reads the nutrition table on the pack rather than a database entry, so a product nobody has catalogued still gets an answer. Its band cut-offs were re-fitted on Indian packs, because European ones mis-scored them, and the verdict lists every point with the figure that earned it. Does Yuka work in India?

Not officially. It is not in India's App Store, and India is not on the list of countries its help centre gives.

Can I scan a food label without installing an app?

Yes. LabelSaaf works in a phone browser: open labelsaaf.com, photograph the nutrition table, and the score comes back with its reasons. No account is needed.

Which app is the best?

That depends on what you want answered. If the pack is in a database, a barcode scan is fastest. If it is not, or you want to see why a score is what it is, read the label, with an app or with the four numbers worth checking yourself.
